Driving to Southampton cruise terminal from the South West: best routes
The best routes from Cornwall, Devon, and Dorset to Southampton cruise terminal.
Driving from the South West to Southampton cruise terminal is a journey of 2 to 5 hours depending on starting point. The route is well-established; the traffic patterns are typically lighter than the routes from the North and the Midlands. This page covers the practical detail.
The standard route
From the South West, the standard route uses the A35, A31, and A36 onto the M27:
From Cornwall: A30 → A38 → M5 → A35 → A31 → M27. Long drive (5+ hours from western Cornwall).
From Devon: A38 → M5 → A35 → A31 → M27. Around 3 hours 30 minutes from Exeter.
From Dorset: A31 → M27. Around 1 hour 30 minutes from Bournemouth.
From Salisbury / Wiltshire: A36 → M27. Around 1 hour 30 minutes from Salisbury.
The M27 then runs into Southampton, with the dock gate approaches as standard.

- M27 J5 to J3: Saturday morning peak.
Pre-cruise hotel from the South West
For Cornwall and most of Devon, the drive is long enough that a pre-cruise hotel is sensible. For Bournemouth, Salisbury, or anywhere within 2 hours of Southampton, a same-day drive works.
Our Park & Stay pages cover the Southampton options. The Holiday Inn Eastleigh is the motorway-side pick.
