Oversize vehicle cruise parking at Southampton: what counts
What counts as an oversize vehicle for Southampton cruise parking, the surcharge, and what does not fit our compound.
"Oversize vehicle" is the parking-industry term for any vehicle bigger than a standard car. The category catches larger SUVs, 7-seaters, vans, motorhomes, and a few other vehicle types. This page covers what counts, what the surcharge is, and what we cannot park.
The standard car definition
A standard car for cruise parking purposes fits within these dimensions:
- Length: under 5.2 metres.
- Width: under 2 metres.
- Height: under 2 metres.
Most passenger cars sit comfortably within these dimensions: saloons, hatchbacks, smaller SUVs, smaller 7-seaters.
A few examples:
- Ford Focus, VW Golf, BMW 3 Series: standard car.
- Ford Kuga, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport: standard car.
- Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y: standard car.
- Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson: standard car.
The oversize threshold
A vehicle is oversize if it exceeds any one of the three dimensions:
- Length over 5.2 metres.
- Width over 2 metres.
- Height over 2 metres.
A few examples:
- Range Rover (full-size): often over 5.2 m length, depending on model year.
- VW Touareg: borderline; check the specific model.
- BMW X5 / X7: X5 is usually standard; X7 is usually oversize.
- VW Caravelle / Mercedes V-Class: oversize by length.
- Ford Transit Custom or other van conversions: oversize by length and sometimes height.
- Most 7-seater SUVs: borderline; check the specific model.
If you are unsure, check the manufacturer's specifications or measure the vehicle. Add the dimensions to the booking notes; we confirm whether the surcharge applies before card details.
The surcharge
The oversize surcharge is typically £3 to £5 per day on top of the standard rate. The exact figure depends on the vehicle's specific dimensions and the cruise duration.
For a 7-day cruise, the surcharge adds £21 to £35 to the booking.
For a 14-day cruise, £42 to £70.
The surcharge covers the larger bay allocation in our compound and the slightly more involved handover.
Why the surcharge exists
Two reasons.
Our compound has bays of standard size. An oversize vehicle uses more space than a standard car. The bay allocation reflects that.
The handover for an oversize vehicle takes slightly longer (the body-cammed walk-around covers more car). The 2-minute target is still achievable but the working margin is tighter.
What we cannot park
A few vehicle categories that do not work in our compound:
Motorhomes. Almost always too tall (over 2 metres). Some smaller campervans fit; most full motorhomes do not.
Vehicles with trailers attached. We do not park trailers. The vehicle needs to be uncoupled for the handover.
Caravans (towed). Same as trailers; we do not park them.
Catering vans, mobile workshops, or other commercial vehicles. We focus on passenger cars. Specialist vehicles do not fit the compound or the standard handover.
Vehicles over 6 metres in length. Even with the oversize surcharge applied, vehicles longer than 6 metres exceed our compound's bay length.
For any of these, the answer is the contact page for a conversation before booking. We may not be able to take the vehicle; if we cannot, we will say so honestly.
What about a vehicle and a small trailer
If you tow a small trailer with the car for some routes, the answer for cruise parking is: arrive without the trailer.
Some customers leave the trailer at a friend's house en route and arrive at Southampton with just the car. Others arrange short-term storage near Southampton for the trailer during the cruise.
We do not offer trailer storage.
What to flag at booking
For any vehicle that might be oversize:
- Make and model.
- Approximate dimensions (length, width, height).
- Whether the vehicle has roof equipment (roof box, bike rack, etc.) that changes the height.
The booking flow asks for the make and model; add notes if the vehicle is non-standard.
Booking
The quote shows the standard rate. If the booking flow flags your vehicle as oversize, the surcharge is shown before card details.
For specific questions about whether your vehicle fits, the contact page has the office number.
