P&O Iona Parking Southampton: Ocean Terminal Guide

Everything Iona passengers need for cruise parking in Southampton, including which terminal she uses, drop-off windows, and the right service for the busiest sailing day.

By Cruise Azure Parking team 6 min read

Booking P&O Iona parking Southampton is one of the most common requests we handle, and for good reason. Iona is one of the largest ships ever to call at the Port of Southampton, carrying over 5,200 guests at full capacity, and her turnaround days are some of the busiest the port sees. We park hundreds of Iona passengers through every season, and we have learned exactly where the queues build, when the terminal car park fills up, and which of our two services makes the most sense for a ship this size. This guide walks you through it.

Which terminal does Iona sail from

Iona sails almost exclusively from Ocean Cruise Terminal at Berths 46 and 47 in the Eastern Docks. P&O treats Ocean as her home berth in Southampton because she physically needs the space, and the Eastern Docks layout gives her the deepest berth and the easiest passenger flow for a ship of her scale. On a turnaround Saturday or Sunday, expect to see Iona dominating the skyline as you approach from the M27.

If your e-ticket confirms Berth 46 or 47, you are heading for Ocean cruise terminal. On rare occasions when Ocean is unavailable due to scheduling clashes, P&O has been known to shift sailings to Mayflower or Horizon, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Always check your boarding pass the week before you sail.

From our compound near the port at SO19 4DY, Ocean Terminal is about a 10 minute drive across the Itchen Bridge. We know the route in our sleep, and so do our drivers.

Typical Iona itineraries and what they mean for parking

Most Iona sailings out of Southampton are 7 nights, with the occasional 14 night cruise stitching two itineraries together. The three big rotations are:

  • Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords (spring through autumn), typically calling at Stavanger, Olden, Alesund, and Geiranger
  • Iberian and Atlantic Coast cruises (shoulder season), with stops like La Coruna, Lisbon, Cadiz, and Vigo
  • Mediterranean fly-cruise positioning runs (less common from Southampton)

For pricing, that means most Iona guests fall into our 7 or 14 night brackets. Our flat rates are £80 for 7 nights and £130 for 14 nights on Park & Ride, or £130 for 7 nights and £170 for 14 nights on Meet & Greet. No surge pricing on bank holidays, no peak weekend uplift, no discount-code chase. The price you see is the price you pay.

For a quick look at P&O's wider Southampton operation, our dedicated P&O parking page covers Iona, Britannia, Arvia, Aurora, Ventura, and the smaller adult-only ships.

Drop-off timing on cruise morning

P&O staggers boarding for Iona because of the sheer number of guests embarking on a single day. Your check-in window will be printed on your boarding pass, and it usually sits somewhere between 10:30 and 14:00, with the latest groups arriving around 14:30 to 15:00. Our advice is to arrive at your check-in window, not before it.

If your slot is 11:00 and you turn up at 09:30, you will be asked to wait, the terminal car park will be rammed, and you will spend an hour shuffling forward in traffic. Park & Ride guests should aim to be at our compound about 45 minutes before their printed window. Meet & Greet guests should aim for the terminal handover point about 15 to 20 minutes before their window. That gets you in, handed over, and walking into check-in without standing around.

Our service hours run 07:00 to 16:30 seven days a week, which covers every published Iona check-in slot with comfortable margin at both ends. If your sailing has an unusual early or late departure, contact us before you book and we will confirm we can cover it.

Meet & Greet versus Park & Ride for Iona

For a ship this size, this question matters more than for smaller cruisers. Here is the honest read.

Park & Ride is the better-value option if you do not mind a short transfer. You drive to our gated, CCTV-monitored compound about 3 miles from the port, hand your keys over, and our minibus takes you and your luggage to Ocean Terminal. On a typical turnaround day the transfer takes 15 to 20 minutes. Coming home, you call us from baggage reclaim and we collect you in a similar window. For most couples and families with manageable luggage, this is the sensible choice.

Meet & Greet genuinely earns its higher rate on Iona days. Because she boards so many guests in a tight window, the Ocean Terminal short-stay car park becomes one of the most congested spots in the port. With Meet & Greet, you drive straight to the terminal, our driver meets you in the designated handover zone, and you walk into check-in inside two minutes. No transfer, no minibus wait, no luggage trolley wrestling. For passengers travelling with elderly relatives, young children, or a lot of luggage, the time and stress saving is real.

Both services include full body-cammed handover outbound and inbound, our gated CCTV compound for storage, and £2 million public liability insurance covering the full duration of your sailing. The difference is purely the transfer, not the security or care of your car.

The return day disembark flow

Iona disembarkation is colour-coded by deck and luggage group, and the earliest groups can be off the ship from around 07:00. Most guests are clear of the terminal by 10:00 to 10:30. Park & Ride passengers call us once they have their luggage and have cleared the terminal building, and we are typically with you within 20 minutes. Meet & Greet passengers walk to the same handover zone they used on cruise morning, and your car will be waiting.

If you have a self-disembark slot (carrying all your own luggage off, typically the earliest option), let us know in advance so we can have your car or our minibus ready for the earlier window. A quick call the night before disembarkation makes the morning effortless.

Why Iona passengers choose us

We have parked over 10,000 cars from Southampton sailings and hold a 4.9 average from more than 980 verified reviews on Google and Trustpilot. Our accreditations include Trading Standards Buy With Confidence and ABP approval. None of that is marketing fluff. ABP approval in particular means we are recognised by Associated British Ports, the operator of the Port of Southampton itself.

We do not park trailers or caravans, and vehicles with hand controls or significant modifications need a quick conversation before booking. Everything else, from city runabouts to large SUVs, is straightforward.

Frequently asked

Q. Where exactly does Iona dock in Southampton? Ocean Cruise Terminal, Berths 46 and 47, in the Eastern Docks. Check your boarding pass to confirm the berth a few days before sailing.

Q. Is Meet & Greet worth the extra on an Iona cruise? For most guests, yes. Iona is so large that her turnaround day creates real congestion at the Ocean Terminal short-stay area. Meet & Greet skips that entirely.

Q. When should I drop my car off? Aim to match your printed boarding window, not the earliest possible time. For Park & Ride, arrive at our compound about 45 minutes before your slot. For Meet & Greet, arrive at the terminal handover point 15 to 20 minutes before.

Q. Do you cover all Iona sailings year-round? Yes. Our 07:00 to 16:30 service hours, seven days a week, cover every published Iona departure from Southampton.
