Pre-cruise night at Ibis Southampton Centre, then sail
A practical guide to spending the pre-cruise night at the Ibis Southampton Centre, then walking to the cruise terminal.
The Ibis Southampton Centre is on West Quay Road, the same broad area as the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour and Voco. The position puts it within walking distance of the Western Docks cruise terminals. The hotel category is value/economy; the cruise-day walk to the terminal is the appeal. This page covers the pattern.
Why this hotel for a pre-cruise night
The Ibis Centre is the value-positioned option for customers who want the walking-distance Western Docks position without the premium hotel charge.
Distances:
- Horizon Cruise Terminal: about 0.5 miles. Easily walkable.
- City Cruise Terminal: about 0.6 miles. Easily walkable.
- Mayflower Cruise Terminal: about 0.8 miles. Walkable for most.
The Ocean and QEII Terminal sailings would require a short taxi.
Which cruise lines benefit most
The Ibis suits cruise customers who:
- Sail from Horizon, City, or Mayflower Terminal.
- Are comfortable walking to the terminal with their luggage (porter assistance at the cruise terminal handles luggage from the gangway side; you handle it from the hotel to the gangway).
- Want a value-positioned pre-cruise night.
The arrival
The hotel is on West Quay Road, accessed from the M27 via M271 to A33. Hotel guest parking is limited; book a parking space if needed.
The evening
The hotel restaurant and bar cover the standard pre-cruise dinner. The Westquay shopping centre is a 5-minute walk and has multiple restaurants. The Old Town is a 10-minute walk.
For value-conscious customers, the hotel or a Westquay chain restaurant covers it.
Cruise morning
The defining feature of the Ibis Centre stay: you can walk to the cruise terminal with your luggage. A typical pattern:
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Check out by 11:00 am.
- Walk the 5 to 15 minutes to your cruise terminal (Horizon, City, or Mayflower).
- Hand the car to us at the cruise terminal short-stay car park (if your car is there) or arrive on foot and meet our driver.
For walk-on customers, the question of "where is the car" is a different conversation. The two patterns:
Park at the hotel, drive to the terminal. Standard pre-cruise pattern. You drive yourself the short distance and hand to us at the terminal.
Park at our compound the night before, walk to the hotel. Then walk from the hotel to the terminal on cruise morning. The car spends the cruise in our compound; you do not see it until return.
The second pattern works for customers who want to leave the car somewhere secure overnight and not deal with the cruise-morning drive at all. It is uncommon but supported.
Cruise day timing
Standard 90-minute arrival applies. From the Ibis Centre, walking to the cruise terminal takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the specific terminal. Leaving the hotel at about 1:45 pm for a 4:00 pm sail-away gives comfortable margin.
Taxi cost from the hotel
If you prefer a taxi rather than the walk:
- Under £8 to any Western Docks terminal.
- £10 to £13 to Ocean or QEII Terminal.
Compared with other value Southampton hotels
The Ibis Centre vs the Premier Inn vs the Ibis Budget:
- Ibis Centre is the walkable-to-Western-Docks pick.
- Premier Inn is the central-city short-taxi pick (suits Eastern Docks too).
- Ibis Budget is the cheaper sister to the Ibis Centre, sometimes shared parking.
For Western Docks sailings on a budget, the Ibis Centre is usually the right call.
