Pre-cruise night at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour, then sail

A practical guide to spending the pre-cruise night at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Southampton, then catching the cruise.

By Cruise Azure team 3 min read

The Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour (formerly the Hilton Southampton Grand Harbour) is the most popular pre-cruise hotel choice at Southampton. The position on West Quay Road puts it within walking distance of three of the five cruise terminals. The hotel is 4-star, the parking is on-site, and the cruise-day handover from the hotel to the terminal is short.

This page covers the practical pattern.

Why this hotel for a pre-cruise night

Three reasons it suits a pre-cruise stay:

Position. Walking distance to City Cruise Terminal (about 0.4 miles), Horizon Cruise Terminal (0.7 miles), and Mayflower Cruise Terminal (0.8 miles). All three are reachable on foot from the hotel if you are not loaded with luggage.

Hotel category. A premium 4-star, with the on-site facilities (restaurant, bar, spa, parking) that suit a relaxed pre-cruise evening.

Hotel parking. Free on-site for guests during the stay. Useful for the pre-cruise night.

Which cruise lines benefit most

The Leonardo Royal is closest to the Western Docks terminals. That makes it the natural choice for:

  • P&O sailings from Mayflower, Horizon, or City Terminal (Iona, Arvia, Britannia, Ventura, etc. on some sailings).
  • Cunard sailings from Mayflower (QM2 transatlantic; some Queen Anne sailings).
  • MSC sailings from Horizon (Virtuosa, Preziosa).
  • Royal Caribbean sailings from City (Anthem of the Seas).
  • Celebrity sailings from City.

For Ocean and QEII Terminal sailings, the Harbour Hotel is closer.

The arrival

The hotel is on West Quay Road, accessed from the M27 via M271 to A33. From M27 J3, the drive is about 10 minutes in normal traffic.

Hotel guest parking is on the hotel grounds, signposted from the West Quay Road approach.

The evening

The hotel restaurant is the simple option. Several other choices within walking distance:

  • The Westquay shopping centre has multiple restaurants (chain options and independent).
  • The Old Town and the high street area are a 10-minute walk.
  • The Pig in the Wall (boutique restaurant) is a 15-minute walk.

For a typical pre-cruise dinner, the hotel restaurant or one of the Westquay options covers it. Cruise customers often pick a relatively early dinner (6:30 pm to 7:30 pm) for a good night's sleep before the cruise day.

Cruise morning

A relaxed pattern:

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Check out by 11:00 am.
  • Drive to the cruise terminal (5 to 10 minutes depending on which terminal).
  • Hand the car over to us at the cruise terminal short-stay car park.
  • Walk to check-in.

If you prefer to do the parking handover earlier, you can drop the car at our compound (for Park & Ride) and take a taxi or the shuttle to the cruise terminal.

For Meet & Greet, the handover happens at the cruise terminal short-stay car park, so you drive yourself the short distance from the hotel.

Cruise day timing

The standard 90-minute arrival applies. If your cruise is at 4:00 pm, plan to arrive at the cruise terminal at 2:30 pm. From the Leonardo Royal, that means leaving the hotel at about 2:00 pm or 2:15 pm.

For peak Saturday cruises in summer, build in an extra 15 minutes for the dock gate queue.

Taxi cost from the hotel

If you prefer to leave the car at our compound the night before and taxi to/from the hotel:

  • Around £8 to £12 to any of the Western Docks terminals.
  • Around £12 to £16 to Ocean or QEII Terminal.

Most cruise customers drive themselves the short distance rather than using a taxi.

What does not work

A few things worth flagging:

  • The hotel does not allow long-stay parking (i.e., leaving the car at the hotel for the cruise duration). The on-site parking is for guests during their stay.
  • The hotel does not arrange the cruise parking with us; you book the cruise parking separately.
  • The hotel does not have a cruise-specific check-in process; you check out as a normal hotel guest.

Booking

For the cruise parking, the quote returns the flat price. The Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Park & Stay page covers the standard pattern.

The hotel booking is direct with the hotel via their own channels.
