Driving from London to your Southampton cruise

Southampton is the easy cruise port to reach from London. It is a straight run down the M3, most of it motorway, and you are not fighting an airport car park at the end of it. This is the drive as we would describe it to a friend: the route, the honest timings, and the small things worth knowing before you set off.

The route

The drive, stage by stage

1

Getting out of London

From south and west London, pick up the A316 over Chiswick Bridge and follow it onto the M3 at Sunbury. From north or east London, take the M25 anticlockwise or clockwise to junction 12 and join the M3 southbound there. The M25 stretch is usually the slowest part of the whole trip, so build your buffer around it.

2

The M3 south

Once you are on the M3 it is one road for over 50 miles. You pass Basingstoke and Winchester, and the motorway ends by feeding you straight onto the M27 westbound, signed for Southampton. There are no tricky decisions on this stretch. Set the cruise control and enjoy the Hampshire scenery opening out after Winchester.

3

The last few miles

Follow the M27 west and then the signs for Southampton Docks. Your booking confirmation tells you exactly where to come: the terminal short-stay car park for Meet & Greet, where our driver meets you 20 yards from the ship, or our compound at SO19 4DY for Park & Ride, a few minutes off the motorway with the shuttle waiting.

Where to stop on the way

Fleet Services on the M3 is the natural halfway point if you want a comfort stop, about 45 minutes from London. Winchester Services further south is quieter and only 25 minutes from the port, which makes it a good place to regroup, top up fuel for the return leg, and arrive unhurried.

When to set off

Most ships board from around midday and ask you to arrive by early afternoon. For a 2:30pm boarding time we suggest being at the port for 12:30, which means leaving London by 9:30am. That sounds generous for an 80-mile drive, and on a good day it is. It also absorbs an M25 crawl, a coffee stop, and Saturday dock traffic without any stress. Nobody has ever regretted being early for a cruise.

Worth knowing for the London end

If your car is not ULEZ-compliant, remember the Ultra Low Emission Zone covers almost all of Greater London, so the daily charge applies to the London end of your drive, not to Southampton. Most petrol cars registered after 2005 and diesels after September 2015 are compliant. Check yours on the TfL website before you travel if you are unsure. Southampton has no ULEZ and no congestion charge.

Two ways to hand the car over, both covered by the same gated compound, body-cam handover, and £2 million public liability insurance.

Good to know

Questions we hear from London customers

About 1 hour 45 minutes on a clear run down the M3. On a Saturday morning in cruise season, allow 2 and a half to 3 hours. The M25 section is usually where the time goes.

Only on the London end, and only if your car is not ULEZ-compliant or you drive through central London during charging hours. Southampton itself has no ULEZ and no congestion charge, and neither does any part of the route once you are on the M3.

Leave by 9:30am. That gets you to the port for around 12:30 even with a stop and slow traffic, which is a relaxed arrival for a 2:30pm boarding time.

For Meet & Greet, drive to the short-stay car park at your cruise terminal and our driver meets you there. For Park & Ride, come to our compound at SO19 4DY, a few minutes off the M27, and our shuttle runs you to the terminal in about 5 minutes.
