Returning vs first-time cruiser: parking choices that change

How parking choices differ between first-time and returning cruise customers at Southampton.

By Cruise Azure team 3 min read

The parking choice changes as you go from first cruise to seasoned cruiser. The first-time customer is buying without prior experience; the returning customer is buying based on what worked or did not. This page covers the practical differences and what to think about as you build cruise parking experience.

First-time cruiser priorities

First-time cruise customers tend to optimise for clarity and safety:

  • Will the operator be there on the day?
  • Is the insurance real?
  • Is the price what I see?
  • Can I find help if I am confused?

Meet & Greet is the common pick. The terminal drop-off removes the shuttle uncertainty; the short handover process is simpler to understand for someone new to cruising.

Returning cruiser shifts

After a first cruise, the returning customer has data:

  • They know what handover process they liked.
  • They know how their cruise line's check-in flow works.
  • They know how heavy their luggage actually is.
  • They know whether the on-board experience feels rushed or relaxed.

This data leads to shifts in the parking choice on subsequent trips.

Common shifts

A few patterns we see in returning customers.

Shift to Park & Ride. First-time customers often pick Meet & Greet for safety. Returning customers who realise their luggage volume was modest, or that the shuttle is uneventful, sometimes shift to Park & Ride for the cost saving.

Shift to Meet & Greet. Returning customers who realised they were rushing on cruise day, or who appreciated the short handover, sometimes upgrade to Meet & Greet on the next trip.

Stay on the same service. Many customers settle on a preference after the first trip and stay there.

Add a pre-cruise hotel. Returning customers who learned the M27 traffic was tighter than expected often add a pre-cruise hotel on the next trip.

Drop the pre-cruise hotel. Returning customers who realised the hotel was an unnecessary cost (their drive was easier than expected) sometimes drop it.

The returning customer discount

Booking the second trip with us means the returning customer discount applies. The discount is a real reduction off our flat published rate.

The discount applies once. For subsequent trips, the standard flat rate applies (which is still typically the lowest credible price in the market).

What about returning customers from other operators

Many returning cruise customers used a different parking operator on the first cruise and are switching to us for the second. This is welcome. Our returning customer discount does not apply (you are a first-time customer with us), but the pricing comparison often makes us the new preferred operator.

What changes after 10+ cruises

Customers with extensive cruise experience tend to develop very specific preferences:

  • They know their preferred cruise line, terminal, cabin grade.
  • They have a usual driving route.
  • They know whether they want Meet & Greet or Park & Ride and rarely switch.
  • They book early and consistently.

For these customers, the cruise parking booking is a routine transaction. Our flat published rate and standard process suit this pattern; the returning customer discount applies for the first repeat booking.

Multi-line customers

Some customers cruise with multiple lines (P&O for the Mediterranean, Cunard for transatlantic, Princess for British Isles). For these, the parking operator is usually consistent across lines (the trip details vary; the parking decision stays the same).

Our coverage of all 16 cruise lines sailing from Southampton means a multi-line customer can stay with us across the variety.

What stays constant

A few things do not change regardless of cruise experience level:

  • Our flat published rate.
  • The body-cammed handover with body-cam record of the walk-around.
  • The £2 million public liability insurance.
  • The CCTV-monitored, gated compound with overnight lockdown.
  • Our coverage of all five Southampton cruise terminals.

The booking flow, the compound, the drivers, and the standard service are the same for the first cruise and the fiftieth.

Frequently asked

Can I always use the returning customer discount? It is one per customer; the second booking gets the discount. Subsequent bookings are at the standard flat rate.

Do you have a long-term loyalty program? Not a formal one beyond the first returning customer discount. Returning customer perks for extensive cruise history are a conversation we have through the office.

If I switched to you from another operator, do I count as returning? For the discount purpose, no (you are a first-time customer with us). For service preferences, your cruise experience still applies.
